FDA warns about buying prescription meds on Web

Federal health officials say some Internet shoppers who thought they'd bought drugs such as sleep aids and antidepressants were instead shipped a powerful anti-psychotic.

In some cases, the unwitting consumers wound up in emergency rooms.

The Food and Drug Administration says a preliminary analysis indicates a number of people took a schizophrenia drug called haloperidol. Investigators say the pills were packaged in plain plastic bags and mailed in envelopes that had Greek postmarks.

However, the buyers thought they'd gotten other pills, such as Ambien, a sleep aid, or Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication.

The FDA says it has reports of several consumers seeking emergency treatment for symptoms such as breathing difficulties, muscle spasms and stiffness.

Pastor fights to sweeten life at McKinney's Sugar Hill projects

Sugar Hill is a McKinney housing project that has endured nearly 40 years of economic and racial isolation, violence and drugs. A stubborn faith has drawn Pastor Rock Carpenter to rescue this place where politicians, police and activists have failed before him. His journey begins in the fall of 2004, a few months after the worst murders in the city's history. Over three years, he discovers whether one man can effect social change, even if it's just 100 apartments at the end of a dead-end street.

First of three parts

Months of violence salt old wounds inside the gates of Sugar Hill.

It started with the murders: a local business manager, her nephew and two high school football players slain in March with a trail leading to the housing project.

Westmoreland County: Balya, Ceraso win new terms; Ward runs strong

Democratic incumbents Tom Balya and Thomas C. Ceraso won new terms as Westmoreland County commissioners while Republican Kim Ward posted a strong showing to become the new minority member of the board.

Unofficial returns in the highly contentious race showed Mr. Balya, 49, of Greensburg, nipping Ms. Ward to capture the most votes in winning his fourth consecutive term. Mr. Ceraso, 43, of New Kensington placed third behind them in capturing his third consecutive term.

Ms. Ward, 50, is no stranger to politics as she is the chairwoman of the Hempfield supervisors and former county Republican Party chairwoman. Her finish was all the more impressive given the heavy Democratic registration edge in Westmoreland County.

Her fellow Republican, George Dunbar, 46, a Penn Township commissioner, trailed the field in the race for the three four-year terms.
