Breast cancer

Raloxifene (Evista) works as well as tamoxifen (Nolvadex) in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in women with BRCA gene mutations, indicates an important study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).Raloxifene may pose less risk for blood clots than tamoxifen, suggests the JAMA study. However, a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) study notes that raloxifene still produces a small increase in the risk for blood clots and stroke. These drugs may not be safe for women with pre-existing heart problems. In any case, only women at high risk for inherited types of breast cancer should consider taking these drugs for prevention.

Trastuzumab

Trastuzumab (Herceptin) has emerged as an important treatment for women with HER2-positive breast cancer, a particularly aggressive type of cancer.

Growing interest in yoga as health therapy

It's a Tuesday night in the year 2028, and a patient arrives in the emergency room complaining of severe back pain. The holographic body scan shows nothing serious, just tense muscles, no doubt the result of the patient's high-stress job as a used-robot salesman.

"Nothing more I can do," the ER physician says. "This man needs yoga, and plenty of it. Call the yoga therapist. We always have one on call."

The doctor pauses, rolling her neck and shoulders stiffly. "Come to think of it, after he's finished with this guy, ask him to stick around and work with me."

Family dog attacks, kills 6-week-old infant

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) A family dog attacked and killed a sleeping 6-week-old baby in Lexington.

Witnesses told police the baby, later identified as Justin Mozer, was sleeping in a bedroom about 3:40 p.m. yesterday when a Jack Russell terrier attacked him.

The family also owns a pit bull.

Police said the mother was bathing another child while Justin Mozer was sleeping in the same room as the dog, WKYT-TV in Lexington reported. Lexington police said the identity of the mother was not available last night.

The baby was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death was not released yesterday.

No charges were pending yesterday, Lexington police Lt. John Gensheimer said.
