| Mackanin lands job with Yanks
Pete Mackanin, who ended last season as the Reds interim manager, has taken a job with the New York Yankees as a major league scout. Mackanin was Cincinnati's advance scout when manager Jerry Narron was fired on July 1. He got the job on an interim basis, and was hoping to stay on as manager. Instead, the club hired Dusty Baker on Oct. 13. It was the second time that the 56-year-old Mackanin managed in the majors on an interim basis. He also led Pittsburgh for the last 26 games in 2005 after Lloyd McClendon was fired. .
Israel criticised for blockading Gaza Strip
The international community rounded on Israel today demanding an end to its blockade of the Gaza Strip as Palestinians reported mounting fuel and food shortages and hospitals ran short of power and medical supplies. The lights went out on the Strip last night when the only electricity plant in the seaside territory closed down after Israel cut off fuel deliveries. Many inhabitants, including fishermen, were unable to work today due to fuel shortages. Essential supplies and United Nations’ aid were blocked from entering the territory, and the UN warned it would be forced to stop distributing emergency food by the end of the week. British, European Union and UN officials said that they were pressing Israel to allow fuel and medicine immediately into Gaza, where 1.5 million people live.

The sixth-ranked Hoyas (16-2, 6-1 Big East) enter the softest stretch of their conference schedule with an opportunity to get a stranglehold on the league standings. When Patrick Ewing Jr. swatted away West Virginia at the buzzer Saturday in Morgantown, the Hoyas officially pulled away from the pack. Given their tiebreaking victory over Notre Dame (14-4, 4-2), the Hoyas now boast a two-game lead in the league. That gap could grow even larger over the next week as they attempt to match the program's best start since 1990 (19-2) with a three-game series against teams with a combined league record of 6-15 (St. John's, Seton Hall and South Florida). Of the trio, only tonight's game against St. John's (7-11, 1-6) takes place away from Verizon Center, where the Hoyas have won 16 consecutive games.
