| Now that was a proper Grand Slam
He'd just won the Australian Open, his shirt was off and his head was dripping with bubbly. Surrounded by his coaches and trainers this was the moment when the enormity of a first Grand Slam title set in. His family, in their white T-shirts, had sprinted around the corridor beneath the court to properly congratulate their hero. His youngest brother, Djordje, who spent the championship celebrating and cajoling from the players box, soon had a beer in his hand. Possibly another first by the look of it. It certainly wasn't the only alcoholic beverage of a lively night... Next morning, head still spinning from that potent cocktail of unregulated joy and unlimited alcohol, Djokovic turned up on the banks of the River Yarra for a photoshoot and TV interviews.
VIEW: It's a sensible request
Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. First, he wanted to ban smoking scenes in films. Next, he wanted office buildings of private organisations to be declared a no-smoking zone. More recently, he labelled drinking alcohol a western vice. Ramadoss has finally come up with a sensible move. He has appealed to screen idols, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, to refrain from lighting up on screen. The health minister has possibly realised that government diktats are unlikely to stop film stars from smoking. A request is a far better and appropriate alternative. Though Shah Rukh — who is reputed to be a heavy smoker in real life — is entirely within his rights to light a cigarette whenever he wants to, he is also a role model for many Indians.
Dec 28th
Well, it's almost time for me to head off to Australia. Tomorrow, actually, but this might be my last chance to get in a blog before then. I will try to blog while there but won't promise. Christmas is over and it was quite a pleasant one. My son visited from Las Vegas and he said he had a good time. It looks like he is set on going back to college full time to qualify as an accountant. He did one class last semester and got an A, so it looks like he should do OK in that field. He has quite a bit of money coming to him for education from the time he spent in the United States Air Force; at least enough for about two years of college. We spent Christmas Eve morning at my wife's parents then headed to Pensacola Beach, Florida to where my wife's sister and family live. Lots of gifts were handed around and we all ate and drank too much.
